Washington State has always been a national leader in civil rights and equal treatment of its citizens.  That’s why nearly 59% of Washington voters approved Initiative 200 in 1998 to forbid discrimination and preferences on the basis of race and gender in college admissions and public hiring.  Its core principle is simple and clear:  Equality under the law, regardless of race.

But this year’s legislature narrowly pushed through a different initiative that instead allows the government to use different rules for different races in deciding who gets into state colleges and universities, and who gets to work for state, county or city government.  Your race would even be a factor in doing contract work with government.

This is a major step backward.  There is too much division in our society today.  We should minimize, not magnify our racial differences. That’s why all of us need to Reject Referendum Measure 88.
